REVIEWS

Just got home from catching the last hour (had to do my radio show) of the Martin & Rob Winch Clapton Tribute Tour show here in Tauranga.

Two words...friggin' brilliant !!!!

I don't know how many more towns they are playing but if you are a Clapton fan or just want a night of great electric rock then you have to catch this show !!

I've always regarded Martin as one of this country's greatest electric guitarists but wasn't familiar with Rob's talents until tonight.. Two words...friggin' brilliant !!!!...as good as Martin but with a harder bite to his guitar sound...and he can sing !! At times his vocals sounded so close to Clapton's it was spooky !!

The legendary bassist Bill Kristian gave me the shivers during his solo.  Stuart Pearce on keys was great (a minor legend himself) some wicked tub thumping from the drummer whose name I don't know (do drummers have names??).  All rounded of with two female back-up singers strutting their stuff.

As I said I only caught the last hour. but even in that time they covered allot of Clapton's history...going back as far as the Mayall/Bluesbreakers era.   Layla for an encore (not an easy song to cover) done like a dinner.

To sum up...two words...you know what they are !!!

Go see this show...it displays the old adage...Kiwis can do anything...
EVEN ERIC CLAPTON...!!!!

Regards...Mike Butler.

The guitar sounds both Rob and Martin had were so authentic especially those early Blues Breakers numbers.

Thanks for the great concert last Sunday night.

Excellent playing, rock solid bass and a great drum solo were just some of the highlights for me.

I would rate the concert as better than some of the overseas acts I have seen

Great show tonight!  Fantastic;  we loved it.

You definitely have a winner there.  We could have quite happily stayed
for another hour. There was some superb playing and the whole evening
was the sort of success that suggests a nation-wide tour.

The Martin Winch 7 piece band, performing the music that inspired his own musical journey and career.

As well as playing several of the exciting blues tunes that started it all, such as Hideaway and Stepping Out, also included are the tunes that became Clapton classics: Crossroads, White Room, After Midnight, Sunshine of your Love, Badge, Wonderful Tonight and of course the 70's masterpiece Layla.

Martin Winch is best known for his CDs "Espresso Guitar" (1 and 2) in New Zealand, which went Platinum many times over and have now been released in Australia (Gold), USA and the UK.

New CD cover April 2003 best of Espresso 1 and 2 release

Martin is a musical "journeyman" with the very same musical influences as Clapton, including Clapton himself, who inspired Martin to pick up the guitar in the first place after hearing Clapton with John Mayalls’ Bluebreakers in 1963.  In the last 35 years, Martin's reputation as a guitarist on 1,000's of recordings and performances - from his early days with "Salty Dogg" and the "1860's Band" to top session player (on famous commercials such as "Welcome to our World") through to now, playing lead guitar in the house band on the Mike King Show, he has commanded solid respect throughout the music industry.

Rob Winch's career as singer, guitarist and songwriter began in Nelson band "Chapter".  Later Rob played with his brother Martin in the legendary Wellington line-up the "1860's Band". Since then, he has become the man behind the scenes on many an iconic NZ song, as well as writing and producing many famous commercial soundtracks. Rob is replaced for Summer 2010 dates by Malcolm McCallum.

The music of Eric Clapton from the years 1966-1977 was an era when Eric Clapton's legend was both born and lived up to.  Clapton's main musical influences came from little known black American blues players such as Freddie King. Clapton and his line-ups brought this music into wide acceptance, becoming part of popular musical culture. It was an era which produced some of the most incredible recordings and performances of Clapton's career. See the list of songs to be performed here.

Martin Winch is an Ernie Ball sponsored artist, as is Eric Clapton.
