Pauline Berry – Manager and Vocalist – is founder of “The Mermaids Dance Band” and more recently “Sugar Town”. Making singing a full time career performing covers with her own lineups, including 90s rock band “No Paparazzi” – she started out in Auckland as a resident nightclub and session singer.
As a result of exploring and performing many different vocal styles, she developed a love of too many to choose just one. Thus she happily performs R & B, country, soul, rock, 1950’s jazz and blues.
But in 2020, after 22 years The Mermaids will be officially disbanded and a new line-up “Sugar Town” has already begun performing; comprising of Pauline and keyboardist Stuart Pearce with male vocalist Shaun Petterson plus female vocalist Gabby West.
As an occasional song writer she has written and released an album, with some of her songs being recorded by other artists. This includes recording artist Amber Claire. A link here to the video of the song Here It Comes Again.
For fun, and to showcase the personality of previous line-u The Mermaids Dance Band, she wrote “The Cocktail Song“. This is a summer themed song with a Latin dance vibe, produced by Stuart Pearce. Please see the videos page. This was co-written with the late, great guitarist Martin Winch of “Espresso Guitar” fame.
She thoroughly enjoys being a backing vocalist, a part of a team. And outside her lineups has sung in New Zealand and Hawaii, behind international performers. She has also capably led backing vocal groups.
Putting the singing first, she has performed as a Marilyn Monroe impersonator on occasion, including on the NZ version of the TV Show “Stars in their Eyes”. She has been requested to appear at special occasions all over New Zealand, to sing just one or two songs, usually “Diamonds are a girls’ best friend” and always “Happy Birthday”!
Pauline is delighted to be the client’s point of contact and is prompt in response to any queries related to live music. She has organized nation wide tours throughout New Zealand in major venues. As well the occasional arts festival. She connects with venues and communicates with clients nationwide.
Pauline and Stuart Pearce perform as a duo for dine and dance functions as “Florida Keys” and newer lineup “Sugar Town” is available 3-5 piece with male vocalist Shaun Petterson.
